My Phone Fell in Water and I Cannot Hear Except With a Headset

Using a cell phone in the rain is a great way to destroy it. When your cell phone comes into contact with water, there is a high probability of something going wrong with the device. Consider yourself lucky if the only thing that is wrong with it is that the earpiece no longer works, as there some procedures that may correct that problem.
However, don't be fooled into a false sense of security. If you keep your phone powered on while water is still inside the plastic shell, your cell phone could be destroyed.
Pure water doesn't conduct electricity and won't hurt your cell phone at all, however, it is fairly rare to encounter this type of water. Most water has dissolved minerals and impurities in it, which allow the water to conduct electricity. Once the water touches the metal on the control board, it can cause a short circuit and destroy some of the electrical components. Even if the water doesn't cause immediate damage, having water on your metal components will cause them to corrode, which can eventually destroy the cell phone's circuitry.
Once your cell phone comes into contact with water, your immediate response should be to remove the battery. Even if you have already checked the phone and see that the earpiece is the only thing that is not working, there could still be water inside your device corroding its components. Remove the battery and use a can of compressed air to gently blow out as much water as possible. Then place the phone in a sealable container, like a freezer bag, with a desiccant like silica gel packets or dry rice. Let the cell phone sit with the desiccant for at least 24 hours, then remove the phone from the container and try to power it on.
Once you have ensured that there is no more water in the cell phone, you can move on to trying to fix the sound problem. You will need to remove your cell phone's outer case to gain access to the control board and the earpiece. You will generally just need a screwdriver and pry tool to get the cell phone open, although the type of screwdriver will be based on your phone's manufacturer and model. Once you have gotten to the control board, check it for corrosion, which will look like green or brown spots on the metal; clean any damage with 98 percent isopropol alcohol and a soft brush. Additionally, check the earpiece speaker itself for damage and clean its metal contacts. If possible, replace the speaker with a new one, although many cell phones have this component hard-wired to the control board.
Once your device came into contact with water, its warranty was voided. Even if you clean the water out, almost all devices have various moisture indicator stickers placed inside the phone. These stickers will inform the manufacturer that your device's issues were caused by liquid and not by a defect in the device. With this being the case, if your earpiece still isn't working after you cleaned or replaced it, it will probably never work again and you will need to purchase a new device. However, many wireless carriers also offer insurance on their phones, so if you have insurance all you need to do is contact your wireless carrier and explain your problem. You will need to pay a deductible, and they will send you a replacement device.
