Android Phone Sign-In and Sync Errors

Your Android handset is working fine, when suddenly you see a sign-in or sync error notification in the notification window and you can no longer access your Google applications. While tapping “Clear” on the notification window may solve the problem in the short term, you must fix the root cause of the notification to keep it from happening again in the future.

Your handset periodically syncs with your Google account to update your different Google apps, such as Gmail, Google Voice, Google Talk and Google Maps. A sync error appears in your notification window if the automatic sync feature cannot verify your user name or password with your Google apps. This notification can appear due to a user error or due to a bug within the Android operating system. Check the "Settings" menu on your handset to verify you have entered the correct user name and password for your Google accounts.
Different settings on your handset can interfere with the syncing process. By default, your handset has automatic syncing turned on, but different applications or a glitch within the OS can cause the setting to change. Press the "Menu" key on your handset and tap the “Settings” option to open the "Settings" menu. From the menu, tap the “Mobile” option. From that screen, select the radio button for “Enable Google Sync.” This will reactivate automatic syncing and may correct future sync or sign-on errors.
Some Android users have reported a bug when alternating between Wi-Fi and data connections. When the user turns off his Wi-Fi connection, or leaves the Wi-Fi hot spot, the device cannot sync to his Google accounts. Having your Android set to search for “Wi-Fi networks automatically” may cause sync issues. Change your Wi-Fi settings to a manual search on your handset and revalidate your Google account information.
The Google Device Policy app provides an extra level of security protection for Google account information. Some Google apps may not work correctly if you have Android 2.2 or higher installed without this application. Download the Google Device Policy app from the Android Market and follow the installation steps. Once activated, the syncing process will work through this app and may prevent future issues.
