Does BBM Work on Android Phones?

BlackBerry Messenger, better known as BBM, does not work with Android-based phones at the time of publication. However, several instant messaging applications are available for Android devices and can be purchased and downloaded from the Android Market. Though it is not available for Android phones in October 2011, some indications have surfaced that an Android version of BBM is on the horizon.

The PingChat! instant messaging application allows you to receive and send voice, video, picture and text messages using a Wi-Fi connection or your wireless service data plan. Using your Android device’s GPS application, PingChat! also shares your location with others. The application uses push technology, which automatically delivers incoming messages to your device and does not require you to log in and manually check for new messages. PingChat! takes up 3.2MB of memory and requires the Android 1.5 operating system or newer to work properly.
Self-described as the fastest instant messaging application available, LiveProfile also enables you to send and receive multimedia messages over Wi-Fi and your provider’s wireless network. The application provides a receipt with each message sent and is able to interface with social network websites, such as Twitter and Facebook. LiveProfile provides unlimited and free messaging and does not use your wireless service plan’s text allotment. LiveProfile occupies 1.8MB of memory and requires the Android 1.6 operating system or newer.
The WhatsApp Messenger application integrates with your Android device’s phone book to automatically create a contact list. You can use the application to send an unlimited amount of text, video, voice and picture messages and can even send international messages without incurring additional charges to your wireless plan. WhatsApp also allows you to conduct group conversations with several contacts at once, similar to a chat room. WhatsApp Messenger requires 4.3MB of available memory and only works with the Android 2.1 operating system or newer.
Earlier versions of the KakaoTalk Messenger application did not support voice messages, but with its updated version, released in October 2011, the app added this feature. KakaoTalk promises no pop-up advertising and involves a two-step activation process that requires you to enter your phone number and then confirm your registration. The application requires 2.6MB of memory and is compatible with the Android 1.6 operating system or newer.
Most instant messaging applications offer the same features, though in different formats and designs. While most instant messaging apps are free, several become a premium application after the free trial period expires. Typically, these trial periods last for one year.
