Signs of Cellphone Neglect

Some signs of damage might not be easy to spot. Cellphones aren't known for being especially hardy. While modern units are more impervious to minor damage, neglect is often clearly visible upon inspection of the general condition of the phone. If you've loaned your phone to a friend or are considering the purchase of a used cellphone, it pays to inspect the phone for signs of neglect to ensure you have a working cellphone at all times. Signs of neglect could be plainly external or hidden inside.

Water damage in and on the phone isn't always plainly visible. In some cases, neglectful use around water won't register on the phone's display, but rather within the phone in the form of corrosion. That's why most phone manufacturers include a water damage indicator somewhere on the phone. A water damage indicator changes color when it comes in contact with water. By checking for the water damage indicator -- which is usually in the headphone jack or under the battery -- you can tell immediately whether the phone has been neglected near water.
Cellphones are outfitted with components which help you access your contact list, send text messages and even take pictures. When you notice that some of the input components, such as the keys on the phone, are missing, it's a clear sign the phone has been neglected in some way. Regular and careful usage of a cellphone will not result in missing keys and buttons. Rough usage, dropping the phone and otherwise neglecting the device renders keys broken and useless.
By powering up the phone and taking a look to see how the phone reacts to different commands, you can test whether or not the phone might have been neglected. A phone that has been well cared for should respond easily and show complete functionality. If some of the features, such as speakerphone or the volume control, don't work, it could be that the cellphone was neglected and damaged.
One last test you can do to see whether or not the phone has been well cared for is to plug the phone into a wall charger. When a phone has been dropped, water damaged or handled roughly, both the battery and the connectors within the phone can become damaged. If the phone doesn't respond to the charger, it's likely due to internal damage, even if the phone looks pristine on the outside. If the owner insists the phone is fine, try the phone with another charger to ensure the charger isn't malfunctioning and that it is indeed a case of phone neglect and damage.
