Reception Strengths of Cellphones

 Cell phone signal strength can be determined by a number of factors. Cellphones provide a convenient way to communicate, whether at home, on the road or at the office. However, cellphone users can experience issues with poor signal reception, resulting in dropped calls or even the inability to make or receive a call. A number of factors can influence cellphone reception strength.

The placement of the towers that transmit a carrier's signal impacts your reception strength. According to the CellReception website, each cell tower provides a signal covering a range of about 10 square miles. These towers transmit signals in a circular pattern. If placement of the towers is such that it does not allow these transmission patterns to overlap, coverage gaps can result in poor reception in the gap areas.
The cellphone model does not necessarily impact the quality of the reception. According to MyRatePlan.com, all phones produced by a particular manufacturer are designed to meet the carrier's transmission specifications. A more expensive phone may offer more "bells and whistles," as well as a higher-quality microphone providing better sound clarity than a cheaper unit. However, the actual ability to pick up the signal is about the same for each of the manufacturer's phones.
In general, you'll experience better reception when using your phone outdoors, especially if you are in an area where signal strength is weak. A weak signal has a more difficult time penetrating a building's exterior. If you have poor reception inside your home in certain spots, you may be able to remedy the problem by placing the phone where the signal is strongest and purchasing a Bluetooth headset for increased mobility. Purchasing a signal booster for your home is another option.
Although you should get better reception outdoors, certain factors can impact your signal. If you're in a mountainous area, a high peak could block the signal and result in poor reception. When driving in an area where cell towers are sparse, you may lose reception temporarily as you move out of transmission range. Bad weather conditions such as a heavy thunderstorm or snowstorm may create reception issues until the weather clears.
